Back in 1996, when I was working at an ad agency in Los Angeles, an art director from Brazil was assigned to the campaign we were creating for American Express. After our third meeting he said to me in his Brazilian accent: “I need a girlfriend. Do you want to be my girlfriend?”
My initial answer was No! But eventually I said yes when he asked “Do you want to be my wife?” - leading to 4 years of marriage in São Paulo, Brazil, followed by a move to NYC and… divorce.
Divorce is hard. We feel grief, guilt, sadness. Even if the marriage was brief, it’s the end of a dream. We face an uncertain future and may hesitate to date again and repeat the same mistakes. That’s how I felt. But eventually, I met Russ, and we’ve been together for 11 years.
Because I’ve been through divorce - and have unique insights on relationship dynamics from my work with Family Constellations - I was excited to accept an invitation to speak at the online Masterclass series Experience Love Again After Divorce.

Our partner relationships can be impacted by the beliefs and energies of our ancestors, our parents, previous partners, in-laws, and our partner’s family. Our own childhood wounding and even our birth order can have an effect.
In my case, I was expressing anger and distrust toward men passed forward through my maternal line. A fellow Family Constellations facilitator told me: “Your poor first husband. He never had a chance.”
